Patachitra paintings were traditionally drawn by the mahapatras or maharanas, the original artiste caste in Orissa. These paintings were traditionally an important medium through which both oral and written epics were narrated. These paintings became an important art form with the ornamentation of Lord Jagannath in the innermost sanctum, where paintings on especially treated cloth or pata of the deities were done by the temple painter. The themes were tribal and folk.
Some of the popular themes represented through this art form are Thia Badhia - depiction of the temple of Jagannath; Krishna Lila - enactment of Jagannath as Lord Krishna displaying his powers as a child; Dasabatara Patti - the ten incarnations of Lord Vishnu; Panchamukhi - depiction of Lord Ganesh as a five-headed deity. More than anything, the themes are clearly the essence of the art form, conceptualizing the meaning of the paintings.
Please note : This is a traditional hand painted product. This process often leave behind large color imprints outside the motif outlines. This is the result of the human involvement in the process of the craft and such irregularities are the hallmark of all handmade, handcrafted product that give it a unique edge over industrially produced fabrics and designs.
