About the craft:
Kotpad Sarees are Hand Spun made with vegetable Dyes, woven by the tribal weavers of the 'Mirgan' Community of Kotpad village in Koraput, Orissa..The natural dye is made from the 'Aul' tree grown in this area. The age of the Aul tree bark and the proportion used , determines the darkness of the colors.The typical motifs of crab, fish, conch, boat, axes, bow, temple etc , reflect the cross cultural linkage of the area. Kotpad handloom fabric is the first item from Odisha that received the Geographical Indication of India tag.It takes approximately 15 to 30 days for processing the color and dyeing threads into different colors. The main colors extracted are black and maroon/red/brown.
